Combining two ingredients may prove an effective hack for achieving a healthier lawn without breaking the bank, a money-saving expert revealed.
The founder of Everyday Cheapskate, Mary Hunt, suggested mixing Epsom salt with lawn fertiliser in October to improve grass health and appearance.
This natural mineral, typically used as a bath soak, contains magnesium, which is crucial for plants to absorb sunlight and produce energy efficiently.
By incorporating Epsom salt into your autumn lawn care routine, Hunt claimed you can enhance root structure, deepen grass colour, and reduce both mowing frequency and fertiliser costs.
Epsom salt, scientifically known as magnesium sulfate, plays a vital role in plant health.
When applied to lawns, it enhances grass’s ability to absorb nutrients and perform photosynthesis more efficiently.
The expert explained that this application is particularly beneficial in October, as it helps grass continue photosynthesis and nutrient absorption before winter dormancy.
“You’ll have the wonderful deep-green colour, better root structure, and you won’t have to mow as often,” Mary stated.
The improved root structure resulting from this treatment makes the grass more resilient, allowing it to recover quickly from winter stress.
This method not only promotes healthier grass but also promises a lush, vibrant lawn come springtime.
The expert provided specific instructions for applying this lawn treatment, as reported in The Sun. She advised: “Mix four pounds of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) in a giant bin or bucket with a bag of your favourite lawn food that covers 2,500 sq. ft.
“Now feed your lawn the same amount of this mixture as recommended on the lawn food bag.”
The ideal timing for this application is between late September and mid-October, depending on your location in the UK.
This period allows the grass to absorb the nutrients before winter sets in.

Epsom salt can be purchased inexpensively, with Mary noting it’s available for just £1 in Poundland.
The expert emphasised that by using this Epsom salt mixture, homeowners can significantly reduce their fertiliser costs.
“You’ll save a lot of money because you’ll be using only half the normal amount of fertiliser,” she explained.
Additionally, the formulation reduces nitrogen content, which slows grass growth and consequently decreases mowing frequency. This not only saves time but also reduces lawn maintenance efforts.
