An easyJet customer has expressed their frustration with the airline, claiming they were unjustly charged £48 for a piece of hand luggage. The disgruntled passenger reached out to easyJet over X after being forced to pay for an item they believed met the criteria for a free small under seat cabin bag.

They argued that their bag was compliant, even sharing a photo showing the bag fitting within one of the airport’s sizing frames. The incident occurred on October 10 during their journey from Manchester Airport to Amsterdam Airport Schipol.

In response, easyJet stated: “When you get charged for bags at the airport, it is normally done when the bags fall out of the bag allowance and you would be given a receipt to confirm this payment.” The airline also referred the customer to their website for further details on cabin bag policies.

Dissatisfied with the explanation, the customer retorted: “It clearly fits wouldn’t you agree?? ” As per easyJet’s guidelines, passengers are allowed one small under seat cabin bag, with maximum dimensions of 45 x 36 x 20 cm, including handles and wheels, and a weight limit of up to 15kg.

EasyJet also directed the passenger to a webpage where they could make a formal complaint. They said: “Please be specific when completing the webform and attach any documentations or receipts, our resolutions team will get back to you.”

Another infuriated traveller responded on X to say they had also been hit by the unexpected charge. They said: “And so it happened to me. Another unfair way to collect extra cash from travellers. Shame on you easyJet.”

EasyJey has been approached for a statement regarding this matter. Passengers can also book to take on board a large cabin bag of up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels. If you book this, you also get Speedy Boarding.

EasyJet chief executive, Garry Wilson, recently issued a caution passengers could soon be paying “hundreds of pounds more” to fly to popular destinations due to green levies. He warned: “They’re named the ‘green tax’ or ‘climate resilience’ or whatever it might be. While I understand the ethos, (we need to) understand what you’re doing with that money.”
