The storm has upgraded to Category 5 amid threat to life warnings and repeated evacuation calls.
The hurricane is expected to hit the Tampa Bay Area in the early hours of Thursday.
It comes after a terrifying moment, which was caught on camera, where hurricane hunters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) were thrown around as the plane was flown into the eye of the storm.
The plane – dubbed “Miss Piggy” – rode through the storm’s 155mph (249kph) winds.
