Gustav Lindstrom is back with the Canadiens — sort of.

The Canadiens announced Wednesday afternoon that they have signed the 25-year-old Swedish defenceman to a one-year, two-way contract. Five minutes later, the Canadiens announced they had placed Lindstrom on waivers for the purpose of loaning him to the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

On Aug. 15, 2023, the Canadiens acquired Lindstrom from the Detroit Red Wings — along with a conditional fourth-round pick at the 2025 NHL Draft — in exchange for defenceman Jeff Petry. Lindstrom played 14 games with the Canadiens last season, posting 3-1-4 totals, and was held pointless in four games with the Rocket.

The Anaheim Ducks claimed Lindstrom on waivers on Jan. 10. He played 32 games for the Ducks, posting 0-6-6 totals, before becoming a free agent.

The Red Wings selected Lindstrom in the second round (38th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. He has 5-30-35 totals in 174 career NHL regular-season games.

The Rocket will open the AHL season Friday night when they visit the Providence Bruins. The Rocket will visit the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday before returning home and playing their home opener next Friday at Place Bell against the Syracuse Crunch.
