Alan Shearer believes Bukayo Saka is a ‘future England captain’ as the Three Lions’ Nations League clash with Greece on Thursday night creeps closer.

The Arsenal star has been in fine form this season, scoring two goals and clocking up seven assists from as many Premier League matches.

Saka has emerged as a key player for England over the past few years, establishing himself as a regular on the right wing.

He could start against Greece on Thursday as the Three Lions look to continue their winning run under interim boss Lee Carsley.

And Shearer, speaking to Betfair, has now backed Saka to one day skipper his country.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to see Saka as a future England captain,” he said of the Arsenal winger.

“He’s already captained Arsenal and because of his attitude, ability, and the way everyone looks up to him, that to me shows he has all the attributes to be an England captain.

“When your team needs you the most to pull something out of the bag, Saka can and does do that.

“I am 100 per cent certain Saka could be a future England captain.”

Shearer added: “Bukayo Saka is absolutely sensational in everything he does.

“He gets whacked every single game, people try to double up on him, kick him and he just goes out and performs with such consistency.

“He’s an incredible talent, has a great personality and he’s just impossible not to like. His attitude is second to none; think of the way he has responded to what happened to him with England in 2021, and the way he’s moved on from it.

“He’s just a phenomenal talent, and he’s so gutsy and tough as well.

“I’ve been there where everyone is trying to mark you out of the game and it’s tough. You can bet your bottom dollar that he’s the talk of the opposition dressing room before games.

“Many have tried but not many have stopped him. He’s just incredible, almost impossible to stop, and such a wonderful talent.”

Meanwhile, Carsley is hoping to guide England to more victories this week – with the clash with Greece set to be followed by a showdown with Finland on Sunday.

And Shearer thinks there’s every chance the former Everton midfielder will be given the keys to Wembley on a permanent basis.

“The two games England have this time around make it another unbelievable opportunity for Lee Carsley and his staff,” he stated.

“Six months ago, he was doing a very good job coaching the U21s and now, he’s the frontrunner to get the senior England job and lead this team blessed with so much talent.

“What Lee has at his disposal is phenomenal and he’s now got the opportunity keep hold of the job and lead England into a World Cup, especially if these next four games go as well as what we expect and hope.

“Because England were relegated in the Nations League, it may have fallen into place for him with us playing in a group which hasn’t got the greatest quality.

“It’s now his opportunity to take this England squad and beat Greece and Finland with a bit of quality, class and style.

“If he does that then I’d expect him to be named the permanent England manager.”
