Two men have been charged in connection with the seizure of a quantity of suspected cannabis worth around £250,000 in Newry.

Officers from the PSNI’s Newry, Mourne & Down District Support Team carried out a proactive search operation at a property in the Canal Street area of the city shortly after 4.40pm on Monday.

A large quantity of suspected cannabis was discovered along with other items.

Two suspects, aged 34 and 28, have both been charged with dishonestly using electricity, being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug, possession of a Class B controlled drug, possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply and cultivating cannabis.

They are both due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

PSNI Inspector Gibson previously said: “Police are committed to making Northern Ireland a hostile environment for those in our community who are involved in the drugs trade.
