A much-loved and iconic bar in South Bristol is set to reopen next week under a new name. LUPE will open on North Street in Bedminster after its predecessor, The Old Bookshop, closed in September.

The bar was taken over by local couple and business owners Mike Fenlon and Emily Penney, who also own Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap on East Street. The owners decided that the Old Bookshop needed a “fresh start and a new beginning”.

Announcing the opening on Instagram, LUPE Bar & Kitchen will open its doors on Thursday, October 17. The post said: “The countdown has begun. We can officially say that our doors will be open from Thursday, October 17.”

LUPE explained the name change on social media, saying that the name comes from a combination of Latin words. It added: “For all of you who’ve brushed up on your Latin, you’ll know that Humulus Lupulus means Hop, and Lupus means Wolf, and the name LUPE was born.”

The kitchen will be run by Bristol brand Eatchu, who will serve Asian-inspired pub grub, alongside classic gyoza and chicken karaage combos and fresh new izakaya snacks. The beer fridge has been curated by the Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap.

Before the closure of the Old Bookshop on September 14, a week of celebration was held where extra special beers were poured. Branded glassware was also available for loyal customers to take home.

At the time of the announced closure, Emily said: “We have been big fans and regulars of The Old Bookshop for many years now and recognise the importance of the space within the community. We hope this final week will give everyone a chance to say farewell and celebrate what the pub has meant to them.

“The Old Bookshop has evolved over time and its offering has changed dramatically since it first opened in 2011. We feel it is now time for a fresh start and a new beginning and we can’t wait to bring our ideas to fruition.

“The fundamentals will stay the same of course. We will have a fantastic beer selection, a well thought out cocktail menu and provide a food offering which is exciting and designed to be eaten with good company. Watch this space!”
