A 24-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of Kyle McDermott in Co Tyrone.

It comes after police made a specific appeal for information about a car parked close to the area in where the 24-year-old was assaulted in Ballymagorry on Sunday night.

He died following the altercation on Victoria Road and police initially launched a murder investigation.

The suspect is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

As is usual procedure all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Earlier PSNI Detective Inspector Hazel Miller appealed directly to those in a blue vehicle parked close to where the serious assault occurred.

“We believe that an occupant captured mobile footage of the incident,” she said.

“Kyle, at just 24 years old, was a young man in his prime when his life was cut short, leaving a family and friends heartbroken.

“I am appealing, in the first instance, to the driver and passengers of that car to please contact us on 101 as soon as possible, as your support could greatly assist our enquiries.

“I will also take the opportunity to extend a reminder to anyone who as in the Victoria Road area on Sunday night between 6pm and midnight to come forward with any information or footage you may have. Please quote reference 1670 of 06/10/24.”

Independent councillor and a relative of the victim, Jason Barr, was among those to pay tribute to Mr McDermott online.

“A smile that will never be seen again. Kyle didn’t deserve this,” he posted on social media.

“Please keep Kyle’s partner Chloe, his mum Claire, dad Stephen, sister Stephanie and brothers Arden and Sheehan and our family in your prayers. Devastated beyond words.”
