Manchester United have reportedly lined up Thomas Tuchel as their preferred option should they decide to part ways with Erik ten Hag during the international break.
United have suffered their worst-ever start to a Premier League season for the second consecutive year under Ten Hag.
The Dutchman set the record 12 months ago when United picked up just nine points from their first seven games.
But their 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday was United’s eighth of the season after just seven games, leaving them 14th in the table heading into the international break.
The Red Devils are already six points adrift of the Champions League places and they’ve never failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition in consecutive years since the Premier League’s inception.
It was reported last week that the United board are set to hold a meeting on Tuesday with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer present.
Ten Hag’s future is expected to be discussed with United in need of a way to turn things around.
And it appears as though they’ve already chosen their No 1 target should Ten Hag get the boot.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Tuchel is the first option following their interest in the summer.
The German head coach remains out of work after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Ratcliffe is said to have held two meetings with Tuchel in the summer, but the 51-year-old turned down an offer to take over at Old Trafford.
Tuchel remains their first choice reportedly due to the fact he is ‘immediately attainable’.
There are reportedly other candidates that are also under consideration, but they’re all currently in work.

Ten Hag once again faced questions over his future from the media after the goalless draw with Villa.
And he revealed he’s set to speak with the club this week with a suggestion he’ll look for clarity on his current situation.
“So I don’t have any idea that is different,” Ten Hag said.

“Because they should have told me. We communicate very open, very transparent.
“I speak continuously with them and just after the game I have to do my job, talk with the players, manage the players and answer questions from you.
“We always talk. Every week, I would say every day we talk, so I expect I will speak with them.”
