The Calgary Flames will start the new season without one of their best forwards.

The Flames announced Monday that Yegor Sharangovich is week-to-week with a lower-body injury and has been placed on injured reserve.

Sharangovich was the Flames’ leading lamp-lighter last season, with 31 goals, and signed a five-year contract extension during the summer.

He was expected to skate alongside Nazem Kadri and Andrei Kuzmenko on Calgary’s first line and has also been working through training camp with the top power-play unit.

The 26-year-old Sharangovich was injured in the final few minutes of Friday’s exhibition finale against the Winnipeg Jets. He was tripped up, falling awkwardly, and headed immediately to the locker-room.

The Flames open the regular season with Wednesday’s clash against the Canucks in Vancouver.
