A mum is urging people to never throw away certain parts of your vegetables as they can surprisingly provide a number of benefits to your diet.
Taking to TikTok, Elle aka @elle_kvl who runs a motherhood and lifestyle account has said that people should never throw their onion and garlic peels in the bin. Once you have chopped your onions and grated your garlic, you should take the peels and put them to one side.
In the video the mum washes the peels and pops them into a baking tin. She uses a cake tin and bakes them and then quickly blends the skins to create a powder which she can then use in her cooking. In her caption she explains: “Did you know that onion and garlic peels are a rich source of fibre, antioxidants, and flavonoids and can even help to support your immune system.”
Not only that, but outer skins of onion and garlic provide an excellent source of vitamins A, C and E. Many people were not convinced in the comments though with one asking if there was even any flavour. In response the mum said: “Yes! I use it for seasoning and flavoring on almost everything! And there’s a ton of flavor in the papery outer layers of onions, and same for garlic.”
So if you have time and don’t want to waste anything – whist getting added benefits to your diet and saving money on buying granules from the shops, then give it a shot.
NHS surgeon Dr Karan Raj also sent a similar message to his millions of followers on TikTok, the Mirror reports. He said the skin of onion and garlic is really useful.
He said: “The skin of both can be added to soups, stocks and stews and removed prior to serving to extract all the beneficial nutrients like Vitamin A and C.”
