If you’re awaiting the arrival of your little one this year, you might be scratching your head over what to name them – and a great place to start for some inspiration could be the annual list of most popular names.
Thanks to trends, pop culture, films, music and other popular topics, new names are always becoming the one to pick with others becoming outdated. To help, the baby name experts at BabyCentre have analysed the data from 2022/23 and identified the names that have seen the biggest drop in popularity, putting them at risk of vanishing completely this year.
Some of these once popular names are not not as common anymore. For example, when it comes to boys’ names, it’s American ones like Keanu, Ryder and Buddy that seem to be losing their appeal the most. And when it comes to Welsh boys’ names, Griff and Bowen have also taken a hit, with surnames as first names becoming less popular recently.
As for girls’ names at risk of extinction, it seems the unusual spellings are on the way out. Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse all lost popularity in 2023, so they could dip even further this year. While certain vintage names for girls like Ivy and Ada were all the rage last year, some other choices – like Flo, Vivienne and Peggy – didn’t get as much love, reports the Express.
Here’s the full list of the top 20 boys and girls names that are at risk of becoming extinct this year.
