The late David Ervine was known for his penchant for a dark suit and the puffing of a calabash pipe — a look that turned the stereotypical image of an Ulster loyalist on its head. His sartorial affectations, although more akin to his arguable lookalike Sir Arthur Canon Doyle, was however more than surface level — it was a reflection of his intellectual and articulate support of the union.
