Bruno Fernandes has been flooded with supportive messages from Manchester United fans after he released a statement on social media following his second red card in consecutive matches.

The Portugal international previously went 242 games for United without receiving a red card before being sent off against Tottenham.

That decision was overturned on appeal but Fernandes was shown another red card in United’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Porto on Thursday evening.

United are going through a sticky patch as a whole with Erik ten Hag’s position coming under scrutiny.

But Fernandes has also taken on criticism for not being more careful and failing to lead by example as the United captain.

The Portuguese star will have a chance of making amends on Sunday when United travel to face Aston Villa before the international break.

Fernandes took to social media on Friday where he revealed the current situation at United is the ‘toughest moment’ in his career.

“Tough moment as a team and personally for me, one of the hardest,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Almost 5 years at the club with ups and downs, good and bad moments.

“Personally, I have always had challenges and adversities throughout my career and something that’s never happened was that I go silent or hide myself from responsibilities in difficult moments.

“I know it sounds cliche and most of you United fans will be tired of it, but no one is more disappointed than myself with my own moment.

“Even through this moment, I appreciate all of you that had positive messages of belief in me and the team.”

And he received plenty of supportive messages from United fans who are backing their captain to get back to his best form.

One message read: “I will never ever doubt your commitment to this football club, and no real United fan should.”

Another person said: “Form is temporary but class is permanent, we are with you my captain.”
