A report has named Bristol as one of the happiest cities in the world. The Happy City Index 2024 has also ranked Bristol as the happiest city in the UK.

The report aims to identify the cities which “cultivates and grows happiness” using five categories taking into account more than 70 different indicators. The cities were then grouped together into either a gold, silver or bronze standard.

There were five themes which the indicators fell under – citizens, governance, environment, economy and mobility. The research was conducted by a team of more than 200 volunteers analysing cities with at least 300,000 people living in it, but exceptions have been made depending on the achievements of smaller cities.

Bristol was named within the gold standard and the total score the city received ranked it as the seventh happiest city across the globe. Bristol’s score of 1709.8 was over 40 points higher than the next UK city, Edinburgh, which scored 1667.8.

Bristol’s score was boosted by the governance and economy themes, scores of 371.6 and 386.2 respectively were the highest amongst cities inside the top 10. However, the mobility score (285.6) was the lowest amongst cities in the top 10.

A total of 37 cities were ranked as gold but just three were from the UK – Bristol, Edinburgh and London. The happiest city according to the research was Aarhus in Denmark, followed by Zurich in Switzerland and Berlin in Germany.
