Tesla has been forced to recall more than 27,000 of its Cybertruck electric vehicle models over fears an issue could increase the risk of a crash.
According to a new filing with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 27,185 electric Cybertrucks are impacted by the recall.
It notes that the rearview camera image may be delayed and reduce the driver’s view of what’s behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The 2024 Cybertruck models with the issue fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rear Visibility”.

NHTSA documents state that, under certain conditions, the vehicle system (including the rearview image) may not complete a shutdown process before the system is commanded to boot up.
It adds: “If the driver starts a backing event before the vehicle system completes its shut down and boot-up, the rearview image may not display within two seconds of placing the vehicle in reverse.”
The safety risk could see drivers continuing to reverse the vehicle by performing a shoulder check and using their mirrors, rather than solely relying on the rearview image.
With the condition present, the rearview camera display may appear blank for up to six to eight seconds when the vehicle is shifted to reverse.
Tesla announced that it would release an over-the-air software update for free to all owners of the impacted vehicles.
Tesla was first made aware of the issue on September 12, as part of an internal compliance audit, before investigating the condition for one week.
As of September 25, Tesla has identified 45 warranty claims and four field reports that may be related to the condition, although it is not thought any collisions, injuries or fatalities are linked.
The electric vehicle manufacturer said all Tesla stores and service centres would be notified about the recall on or shortly after September 30, 2024.
This is the fourth recall for the 2024 model Cybertruck, which has been marred with issues since its release at the end of last year.
The most recent recall saw two notices issued on June 19 for an improperly adhered trunk bed trim that can detach and a front windshield wiper that can fail.
Prior to this, there were fears that the vehicle could accelerate unintentionally from a trapped pedal after it was found that the cover for the pedal could become trapped.
The all-wheel drive model of the Tesla Cybertruck has a starting list price of $99,990 (£76,232), an estimated battery range of 318 miles and can go from 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds.

The upgraded Cyberbeast has an estimated range of 301 miles and a staggering top speed of 130mph, 845 horsepower and goes from 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds.
While many are impressed with the steel-clad pick-up truck, some experts have stated that it is unlikely that Britons and European drivers will see the Cybertruck on roads any time soon.
This has been put down to safety requirements which are different in the European Union compared to the United States.
