According to reports, Tyson Barrie will be sticking around Calgary this season.
The veteran defenceman has been with the Flames throughout training camp on a professional tryout agreement and according to the Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, Barrie has agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth US$1.25 million.
The 33-year-old has played in 809 NHL games, most recently spending the past season-and-a-half with the Nashville Predators. He’s proven to be a gifted creator in the offensive end, scoring 109 goals and adding 396 assists, and could be an option on the Flames’ second power-play unit this season.
He also has history with Flames head coach Ryan Huska, as the two spent four seasons together with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL in the late 2000s.
After an underwhelming season last year with the Predators, Barrie had to wait for a contract offer and wound up accepting a tryout with the Flames. He put up three assists in four games during the pre-season.
“It’s definitely a different situation than I’ve been in the past, but you approach it the same way,” Barrie told Postmedia early in training camp. “I’ve worked hard all summer and have a good opportunity ahead of me. I know I’m a good player and I know I have some game left in me, so just go and try to showcase that.
“You just want to show up every day and show to them that you want it and you’re the guy for the job.”
Barrie will likely be competing for the Flames’ sixth job on the blueline, with Brayden Pachel very much in the mix for that spot, too.
