Saturday, Oct. 5 | Calgary vs. UBC | Father David Bauer Arena | 3:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Hockey season is here for the University of Calgary Dinos, with the women’s program opening up on home ice in a postseason rematch against UBC. Calgary will welcome the reigning conference champs to Father David Bauer Arena for a pair, with Friday’s season-opening puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday’s rematch will start at 3 p.m.
Calgary is coming off another strong second-half surge last season that saw them finish the regular season as the No. 5 seed before going on the road and knocking off fourth-seeded Saskatchewan in the conference quarterfinals. The Dinos nearly kept that dream run going, taking UBC to a decisive Game 3 in the Canada West Semifinals before bowing out.
Josh Gosling was officially named Calgary’s head coach after serving as the interim head coach for the majority of last season. Now in his fourth season overall with the Scarlet & Gold, Gosling has a talented but younger roster that features 13 first or second-year players. The Dinos also graduate three of their top-four point scorers from a season ago, but do return third-year forward Sydney Mercier, who has finished in the top-10 in points in Canada West each of her first two seasons.
Despite not playing UBC much over the past few seasons, Calgary has shown it can more than hold its own against the reigning champs. In fact, the Dinos were the lone team to hand the Thunderbirds a loss in regulation in last year’s conference slate, doing so in Vancouver. In the head-to-head series, the two programs are split right down the middle in their last 14 regular season games.

The Dinos men’s hockey season also opens up its conference slate this weekend, heading to Vancouver for a pair against UBC. The Canada West Final rematch will open up Friday at 8 p.m. MT, with Saturday’s action set for a 4 p.m. MT puck drop.
Calgary once again will have high expectations coming into the season. The Dinos won the conference title in 2022-23 and finished as the Canada West silver medallists last season after a nail-biting three-game series in Vancouver went the way of UBC.
Two-time U SPORTS Coach of the Year Mark Howell enters his 16th season leading the Dinos. Howell – who was just named the head coach of Team Canada for the upcoming 2025 FISU Winter World University Games – returns his top five goal scorers from a season ago, led by Colson Gengenbach, who racked up a career-best 22 goals in the regular season last year.
While the Dinos hold a lopsided advantage in the all-time series with the Thunderbirds, the two teams have had some memorable battles of late. In the last 20 regular season head-to-head matchups, the Dinos hold a 13-7 edge, but that shifts to 7-7 over the same time span in games played in Vancouver.
Dinos Football (1-4)
Saturday, Oct. 5 | Calgary at Regina | Mosiac Stadium | 2:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
It’s back to the road for the Dinos football team, as they are off to Regina’s Mosiac Stadium for a 2 p.m. showdown Saturday with the Rams.
Saturday marks the rematch of this year’s season opener. In that one, Regina walked away from McMahon Stadium with a narrow 24-16 win, as the Dinos offence started clicking a little too late and their comeback effort just ran out of time.
While the Dinos sit at 1-4 through the first five weeks, their point differential of minus-five tells a more complete story of their season thus far in that seemingly every game has come down to the end. Calgary has lost games by 8, 4 (in double overtime), 5 and 2 points, respectively, in a painfully close season across all of Canada West.
Last week, running back Matthieu Clarke rumbled for 188 yards rushing and Dom Britton threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, but UBC kicked a game-winning field goal with 56 seconds left in yet another close contest.
Calgary will look to get back in the win column in a place that has proven to be a challenging of late, with the last Dinos win in Regina dating back to Aug. 31, 2018.
Dinos Men’s Soccer (5-1-4)
Saturday, Oct. 5 | Calgary vs. MacEwan | Dinosaur Field | 2:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Sunday, Oct. 6 | Calgary vs. Alberta | Dinosaur Field | 2:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Calgary’s men’s soccer squad – which sits just outside the U SPORTS top 10 for the second straight week – will return home for the final time this regular season, hosting a pair of games at Dinosaur Field this weekend. It all starts Saturday at 2 p.m. when MacEwan comes to campus before Alberta follows suit for a Sunday contest, also at 2 p.m.
After a second 1-1 draw with crosstown rival Mount Royal last weekend, the Dinos stretched their undefeated streak to six and improved to 5-1-4 on the year. Also during this six-game span, Calgary has outscored its opponents 17-5.
With four games left to play, the Dinos sit in second place in the Canada West Prairie Division with a win percentage of 0.633 – trailing only Alberta (7-1-2 / 0.767) for the divisional lead.
Both of this weekend’s contests are rematches from earlier this season. The Dinos dropped a 1-0 battle at Alberta back on Sept. 7 one day before a 2-0 win at MacEwan.
Following this weekend’s action, the Dinos have the Thanksgiving weekend on bye before closing out the regular season Oct. 18-20 on the road.
Dinos Women’s Soccer (7-1)
Saturday, Oct. 5 | Calgary at Saskatchewan | Griffiths Stadium | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Sunday, Oct. 6 | Calgary at Regina | University of Regina Field | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Calgary’s women’s soccer team continues its four-game road swing through the prairies, heading to Saskatchewan (Saturday) and Regina (Sunday) for a pair of divisional battles. Kickoff for both contests is set for noon.
The Dinos find themselves once again in a battle for the top spot in the division. Calgary holds a 7-1 record with six games left to play, good for 21 points and a two-point lead over MacEwan, thus far. The 7-1 start is the best under third-year head coach Diogo Raposo.
For their early success, the Dinos are ranked for the third week this season, checking in at No. 9 in the latest U SPORTS national top 10.
Calgary hosted both of this weekend’s opponents just two weeks prior (Sept. 21-22), posting a 5-0 win over Regina and a 1-0 win over Saskatchewan.
The Cougars and Huskies both have plenty to play for, as well, currently battling for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. Saskatchewan sits at 4-2-2 through eight games for 14 points, while Regina holds a 3-5 ledger for nine points.
Dinos Field Hockey (0-6)
Saturday, Oct. 5 | Calgary at UBC | Lynn “Buzz” Beecroft Field | 12:00 PM MT
Sunday, Oct. 6 | Calgary at UBC | Lynn “Buzz” Beecroft Field | 12:00 PM MT
The Dinos’ field hockey squad closes out the 2024 regular season this weekend, heading west for the second straight weekend, this time taking on Victoria for two games from Lynn “Buzz” Beecroft Field, starting Saturday.
Calgary continues to lay the building blocks for the future of the program. In head coach Jenn Beagan’s first season, the Dinos have seen a number of improvements all season long. Last weekend alone at UBC, the Dinos found the back of the net a season-high three times in a close loss to the league-leading T-Birds. Redshirt Allegra Nelson scored once before rookie Nina Khalfan finished off a pair of penalty corners in the highly entertaining contest.
The Dinos will have their work cut out for them this weekend. Victoria posted a pair of 6-0 wins in Calgary back in early September to open the 2024 campaign.
Dinos Golf
Monday, Oct. 7 | Calgary at Canada West Championships | Okanagan Golf Club – Kelowna, BC
Tuesday, Oct. 8 | Calgary at Canada West Championships | Okanagan Golf Club – Kelowna, BC
The first Canada West Championships of the 2024-25 school year are upon us, as the Dinos golf team heads to Kelowna for this year’s conference championships, hosted by UBCO at the Okanagan Golf Club. The action gets underway Monday before both team and individual champions are crowned on Tuesday.
Calgary has had a strong start to the season. The men’s team won both of its two local tournaments, while the women finished second in Lethbridge before winning their home tournament just two weeks ago.
Historically, the Dinos have had a number of memorable performances at the Canada West Championships. In the inaugural conference championship back in 2019, Victoria Tse finished runner-up on the women’s side, while Ethan Banks won the men’s individual title back in 2021.
Opening tee time Monday is set for 12 p.m. MT.
