Erik ten Hag wants to be given until the end of the season before being judged by Manchester United fans despite growing calls for him to be sacked.

United have endured a torrid start to the season and are now winless in four games after a 3-3 draw with Porto.

Harry Maguire ensured the match ended on a high note for United with an equaliser in stoppage time.

However, United were seemingly on course for a comfortable victory after taking a 2-0 lead before capitulating defensively.

Erik ten Hag has called for patience once again

United have only won three of their first 10 games of the season in all competitions and face a tricky match away to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But Ten Hag has repeated his calls for patience from frustrated United supporters and wants the board to back him until the end of the season.

“We will get there,” he said.

“Don’t judge us in this moment, judge us at the end of the season.

“I said the same last season, just wait. We are in the process. We will improve.

“We have now two seasons where we achieve finals. Just wait, we have to develop and progress this team.”

He added: “We will work and we will continue and we will fight.

“You see the spirit and the connection between the staff and the team and the players together have a strong spirit.

“We are in a direction, but in some defending parts we have to step up.”

Ten Hag has the backing of the dressing room, according to Maguire, who suggests the criticism at United is often overblown.

“I’ve played for this club for six years so I know how it works,” he said.

“When you go through a bad spell, players come under pressure, but also the manager does.

“He’s experienced enough, been in the game long enough and been at this club long enough that I’m sure he’s learned how to deal with it.

“It’s part and parcel of playing for this club or managing this club and part of the privilege that we have.”
