A drunk driver has been banned from the roads and fined £1,384 after police pulled him over on the night that England beat Switzerland on penalties in the quarter finals of the Euros. The man was wearing an England football shirt when Avon and Somerset Roads Policing team stopped him on the M5 northbound, near Weston-super-Mare, shortly after 2.30am on July 7 this year, after he was spotted driving erratically.

An officer explained to the driver that he had been pulled over for poor lane discipline, as he had weaved onto the hard shoulder a few times. The man was asked whether he had consumed any drugs or alcohol. He told police that he hadn’t but they had their suspicions.

However, when a breath test was carried out, he was found to be over the legal limit, and was taken to the police station to provide a further breath sample for analysis which he refused to do. He was also found to have been driving without insurance.

After admitting to these criminal offences, the man was disqualified from driving for 29 months, and ordered to pay a fine of £1,384. Police have also shared footage of the incident in light of the driver’s sentence.
