Prince William has been pictured for the first time since Princess Kate’s return to work, as the royal posed with “Aston Villa royalty”.

Tonight Aston Villa will play their first home game in Europe’s top tier since 1983.

Villa, which is also the Prince of Wales’s favourite team, are hosting Bayern Munich in the Champion’s League.

They last beat the German side to lift the 1982 European Cup.

Major Villa fan Prince William is in attendance tonight to meet with members of that victorious squad.

Aston Villa’s social media team posted a picture of the royal with the victorious 1982 squad.

They captioned the post: “Royalty meets Aston Villa royalty.”

One fan replied: “It’s another beautiful night for Villa. Let’s go and be great.”

Another said: “So good to see him.”

A third commented: “Great pictures and the Aston Villa sign on the grey floor looks good.”

One royal watcher added: “Wow love to see this.”

As a school boy, William decided to support Aston Villa, a club that, at the time, were fighting for a place in the European Cup.

Decades later, William will finally watch Villa play in Europe’s elite club competition when his team face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Prince of Wales will be in attendance at Villa Park as Unai Emery’s side bid to make it two wins from two matches on their return to the biggest stage after their 3-0 success over Young Boys.

William, who was alongside ex-Manchester United midfielder David Beckham at The London Air Ambulance Charity earlier this week, presented the likes of Ally McCoist and Karen Carney with OBEs at Windsor Castle on Wednesday before making the trip up to the Midlands for Villa’s clash against Bayern.
