As Lorraine Kelly nears her 65th birthday, she’s being celebrated by her famous friends and colleagues for reaching an impressive 40 years on television. The beloved presenter of ITV’s ‘Lorraine’, which airs every weekday morning, has revealed her secret to maintaining relevance as she approaches this significant career landmark.
Earlier in the year, while chatting on the ‘How To Be 60 with Kaye Adams’ podcast, Lorraine revealed how she steers clear of a “big danger” that comes with ageing, simultaneously cautioning others against becoming too set in their ways.
Her key advice for those hitting their sixties is to stay “curious” and open to new experiences. Lorraine said: “I think it’s all about being curious, you know, it’s all about wanting to find out about more things, being interested in new music – you may not like it that much – but listen to it!.
“Don’t just dismiss something because it’s unfamiliar; give it a try. Whether it’s watching something on TikTok or anything else, don’t just say, ‘oh, you know…’ and write it off. Have a go, and if it’s not to your taste, that’s fine, but at least you’ve tried.”
In reference to a previous discussion on the podcast where ‘Loose Women’ star Kaye Adams talked about the detrimental effects of “gurning”, Lorraine emphasised: “Don’t get set in your ways.”
She warned of the risks of becoming inflexible, saying, “I think that’s a big, big danger, because you were talking earlier about gurning and being moany and all of that, and that’s a really sad thing.”
Lorraine expressed her dislike for seeing older individuals become grumpy, adding: “I hate to see older people like that, because nobody wants to be around you then.”
“Older people have amazing stories to tell, and if you’re somebody that’s interested in everything that’s going on, you’re not just interested, you’re interesting, aren’t you? And people want to spend time with you, and that’s what you want.”
Lorraine also joked about her approach to ageing, stating: “It’s better than the alternative”.
Tonight, Wednesday, October 2, at 9pm, Lorraine will be honoured in a new ITV documentary, Lorraine: 40 Unforgettable Years. This comes after she joined TV-am in 1984 and subsequently became one of the UK’s most beloved television presenters.
