Max O’Leary – 6
Was relatively untroubled throughout and barley touched the ball in the first half as City quietened the Owls’ attacking threat. He was called into action late in the second half, reacting well to Michael Smith’s header. A first clean sheet of the season will do his confidence the world of good.
George Tanner – 6
The right-back looked really bright down the right-hand side for City and was a real threat with the ball at his feat. He used his power to limit any real threat from Josh Windass and Shea Charles and his display would’ve definitely boosted his confidence with Ross McCrorie return from injury soon.
Zak Vyner – 7
Vyner asserted himself really well in the backline and looked really strong against Anthony Musaba in attack. The centre-back was very proactive on the ball – always looking to spread the play out wide or through Wednesday’s armoury down the middle. Stood up when the going went tough near the end.
Luke McNally – 6
The summer arrival didn’t play as much of a part as his centre-back partner Vyner but was still pivotal in keeping the visitors quiet. Only area of concern for McNally was his passing, with a couple of passes not quite finding their man.
Cam Pring – 6
A really solid performance and one worthy of a starting place after being given the nod to start at left-back over Haydon Roberts. Defensively really strong but it was the defender’s attacking threat which caught the eye – making positive runs forward and linking up really well with Mehmeti. Came under a bit of pressure after Djeidi Gassama’s introduction but still showed his strength and pace defensively.
Jason Knight – 7
A real captain’s performance once again by Knight as he led by example similar to his display against Swansea. The midfielder was key to everything City did going forward and always looked to work space in order to unlock the Owls defence. His passing abilities are a real asset in City’s weaponry.
Joe Williams – 6 (booked)
Came back into the side after being dropped from the starting XI against Swansea and made a real handful himself in the midfield. Looked really good alongside Knight – playing a little deeper to his partner in the centre of the park. Williams did look good in spells having replaced Bird in the starting side.
Yu Hirakawa – 7
He’s becoming more and more liked by everyone at City every passing game. Shouts of “Yu” coming from the Ashton Gate faithful shows how much of a favourite the winger is becoming. His performance once again excited as he put in a number of teasing crosses into the box which just screamed for a taker. More good minutes for Hirakawa, who also moved out onto the left when Sykes replaced Mehmeti.
Anis Mehmeti – 6 (replaced on 71 minutes)
Looked a real handful again following his Swansea performance, which also warranted a goal. And he could’ve been on the scoresheet today as well but was stopped by an excellent James Beadle save just before half-time to open the scoring.
Scott Twine – 7 (Replaced on 84 minutes)
His first half display was superb, everything City did came through Twine. He was a vital cog going forward and thrived in the role behind Armstrong. Although his second half showing didn’t quite meet the levels of the first 45 minutes, it’s a performance which showed sparks but could’ve done with a goal.
Sinclair Armstrong – 5 (replaced on 60 minutes)
A difficult evening for Armstong, who was matched by pace and strength by Owls defender Di’Shon Bernard. The Wednesday defender really limited the City front man’s play, with Armstrong not having many clear-cut opportunities.
Nahki Wells – 5 (On at 60 minutes)
Like we’ve seen over recent games, Wells came off the bench to replace Armstrong as Manning looked to change his attacking dynamics. The striker used all of his experience in troubling the Sheffield Wednesday defence but couldn’t trouble Beadle in goal.
Mark Sykes – 5 (on at 71 minutes)
Looked bright and lively on the right wing but was contained by Marvin Johnson in large parts. Could’ve found a winner late on in stoppage time but forced a great save out of Beadle.
Max Bird – N/A (On at 84 minutes)
Came on in the final minutes to sure up the midfield.
