Robert Jenrick has joked that the Conservative Party “could not afford the bar bill” if Nigel Farage were to join the Tory Party.

In a Q&A with GB News political editor Christopher Hope at the Conservative conference in Birmingham, the Tory leadership hopeful described Reform as a “symptom not a cause” of the “failures” in Westminster.

He said: “I don’t think the party could afford the bar bill if we invited Nigel Farage into the party.

“Although on a serious note, my view of Reform is this, I think it’s a symptom, not a cause.

“It exists in its current state because we failed and by that, I don’t mean you, the members of the party.

“I mean we in Westminster. We made promises. We didn’t keep them. So I’m not going to disparage Reform.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“What I am going to do is set out, with your support, to make them redundant. To retire Nigel Farage.”

“I think you do that by being crystal clear on where we stand on the issues that we have lost the trust on.

“Such as legal migration, illegal migration, integration, extremism, policing. If we can do that, then we make our party what it was when I was growing up.

“The natural home for every small Conservative. The length and breadth of our country. Let’s do that.”

Christopher Hope asked him what position he would give Boris Johnson if he was elected the leader.

The Jenrick responded: “Hard question. I haven’t read his book yet, so I want to wait and see what he said about me before answering that question.

“But you have actually asked me that question once before or something similar.

“I think I said this to you. The Conservative Party is in a hole right now.”

Boris Johnson

We need to get all of our best players on the pitch now.

“People can do that in many different ways in Parliament, out of Parliament, campaigning, advertising.

“So if I was lucky enough to lead this party, Boris, Penny Mordaunt you name it, let’s get the Conservative family back together. Let’s get back in business again.”
