A 14-year-old girl has sustained serious injuries in the wake of a suspected acid attack outside a school. As well as the girl, a 16-year-old boy, and a 27-year-old woman were also treated.
Two police officers were also taken to hospital later after reportedly feeling unwell. The incident took place at Westminster Academy in central London.
Metropolitan Police officers were flagged down by a member of staff after the incident on Alfred Road, Westbourne Park, at around 4.40pm on Monday (September 30). Police are still searching for a suspect.
Several crime scenes have been established. The girl is said to be suffering from potentially life-changing injuries and remains in hospital. The boy was also hospitalised, but his injuries are not life-threatening. The woman has since been discharged.
A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: “Tests of the substance are ongoing. At this stage officers believe it to be acidic. Urgent inquiries are under way to identify and arrest those responsible.”
A message on the school website confirmed it is still closed as of Tuesday morning (October 1). It reads: “Due to unforeseen circumstances the WA school site will be closed on Tuesday 1st October. Students will resume lessons through online learning. Information will be shared with them via Google Classroom through their teachers. Thank you for your understanding.”
The previously scheduled Year Six open morning set for Tuesday has now been delayed. The academy, which caters to students aged 11 to 18 without selection criteria, has been caught up in unexpected events.
