Tributes have been paid to an eight-year-old boy who died after being shot in the head. Jay Cartmell of Frizington in West Cumbria was killed in an incident on Saturday.
He died after suffering serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop. Police officers are continuing with their enquiries into this incident.
Now tributes have been paid to the “talented footballer” who played for Whitrehaven Miners Under 9 team. The Club posted on Facebook pictures of the youngster proudly wearing his strip.
Others showed him collecting awards and with his fellow teammates. The post simply said: “Rip wee man.” It was followed by five broken heart emojis and the hashtags one of ours and lantern for life. It added: “Our thoughts are with your family, coaches n team mates.”
Coaches and other devastated families paid their own tribute to the tragic youngster. Natalie said: “RIP little man. You were a talented little guy, and full of character. Pleasure to coach, and a pleasure to call my sons friend. In our hearts forever.”
Liv said: “Fly high gorgeous boy. We will remember you always, especially that smile. We send so much love to the family. The miners family are always here for you.”
Nicola said: “Sleep tight little man, forever a U9 miners blue . Sending lots of love and strength to all your little friends, school friends, team mates and family” Kimberley added: “Rest in peace Jay, a fun and lovely friend to Isaac and such a loving little boy, with that cheeky smile driving nan round the bend on your scooter. Sending so so much love to all of your family and friends.”
Other clubs united with the Whitehaven team in their grief. Carlisle United Ladies wrote: “On behalf of everyone at Carlisle United Ladies . We would like to send our condolences. Our thoughts are with family, friends and everyone at Miners.” Dearham Rangers Juniors FC said: “There are no words. Deepest condolences from everyone at Dearham Rangers FC. Rest in peace little fella x”
And the West Cumbria Youth League sent their condolences saying: “Our thoughts are with family, friends and team mates. Whitehaven Miners Social Football Club, you have our absolute support, anything you need please just ask.”
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. They were called to the scene at 2.50pm on Saturday to a report that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm at the property.
A police spokesman said: “Police and NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) attended. The firearm was secured at the scene by police and an eight-year-old boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance having suffered serious and life-threatening injuries to his head and face. Sadly, the boy has died overnight.”
Officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH. In an update they said this was now on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has since been bailed as police investigations continue.
