OTTAWA — Canada’s foreign affairs minister condemned Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel on Tuesday, saying it will do little but escalate the conflict.

Speaking during question period on Tuesday, Melanie Joly said Canada “unequivocally” condemns the attack.

“These attacks from Iran will only serve to further escalate the region,” she said in the House of Commons, adding she’s been contacted by her counterparts in Israel and other G7 nations.

“This is a very dangerous time for the Middle East, and we need to make sure this war stops.”

Iran launched a barrage of hundreds of ballistic missiles against Israel on Tuesday, in what was described as retribution for the death of top Hamas and Hezbollah officials.

Israel’s Iron Dome defence system, aided by U.S. Navy destroyers, managed to take out most of the missiles while they were in the air, but video posted to social media showed numerous impacts.

Speaking to media, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari of the IDF said Israel will respond to the attacks.

“This (missile) fire will have consequences,” he said.

“We have plans, and we will act in the time and place that we choose.”
