Octopus and OVO Energy have taken huge steps to assist their most vulnerable customers, as the price cap on energy bills has surged by an average of 10% from today (October 1). The two energy titans are distributing free electric blankets across the nation, with Octopus’ chief suggesting they cost as little as ‘3p an hour’ to operate.
However, if you’re not an OVO or Octopus customer and are disappointed you can’t snag one of these giveaways, Dunelm offers a perfect house-warming alternative – and it only costs a mere £17. As you might have guessed, this surprisingly affordable item is an electric blanket.
The sheet, crafted from a thick, ‘soft to touch’ material, features a powerful 35W output and a three-heat setting remote. Thus, customers can choose whatever temperature suits them best for a restful night’s sleep.
For those concerned about overheating, it also automatically switches off after a certain period of time, ensuring it’s completely safe to use both day and night. Sellers add: “The blanket is efficiently designed to allow consistent warmth as you sleep.
“For a quick and easy clean, simply detach the temperature controller and pop the blanket into the washing machine.” Dunelm’s affordably cosy item comes as the the UK is gearing up for the impact of Ofgem’s new energy price cap.
Typical households paying by Direct Debit and using electricity and gas will see bills go up to a staggering ‘£1,717 per year’ from today (October 1) to December 31. While electric blankets will add to a household energy bill, their cost is usually between ‘2p and 4p’ per hour, according to a previous Mirror report.
Past initiatives distributing electric blankets free of charge have also reportedly caused gas bills to drop by an average of 20%, saving customers around £150 across three winter months.
If Dunelm’s offering doesn’t quite meet your needs, there’s a plethora of alternatives available online too. For £25 you can bag yourself another 135 x 120cm electric throw from Amazon, while Argos is selling another type for £35.
