A campaign has begun to bring back one of South Bristol’s biggest community events this winter, two years after it was last held. Organisers of the Bedminster Winter Lantern Parade took a break from hosting the event last winter, but want it to return this winter, and have launched a fundraising campaign to make it happen.
The Winter Lantern Parade happens in January or February each winter and has been running for 11 years, albeit with a year off for the Covid pandemic. It was last held on the first Saturday in February 2023, but a year ago organisers said a 2024 event was not going to take place.
Now, community stalwart and pharmacist Ade Williams – the chair of the Bemmy Lanterns organising committee – said he wants to bring it back, and has set a £10,000 fundraising target. That will pay for everything that’s needed to host the event this year – as long as enough volunteers come forward.
The parade event starts in the autumn, with children at schools across Bedminster, Ashton and Southville, making elaborate lanterns to then parade down North Street and British Road from Ashton Gate to Bedminster, in an event that sees hundreds take part, and thousands watch.
“We were gutted that residents had to miss out last year,” said Mr Williams. “We’re determined to bring it back this year for all residents. Our 2025 theme is ‘Bristolians, together’ where we will bring to life the pride and inclusiveness of our wonderful city.
“The event is supported by 200 wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly each year to secure the funding and provide logistical support on the day. Support from our local businesses and the public is vital in making the parade happen and we hope you’ll join us this year.
“We want everyone to be able to take part in the 2025 parade and have access to a free cultural activity, whether participating in a creative workshop at school or with their community group or in the parade,” he added.
