London police are investigating an assault involving a weapon near Western University’s main gates during homecoming weekend that sent two people to hospital.

Officers were called to Richmond and Huron streets, near campus, for a welfare check at approximately 9:45 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release issued on Sunday.

Police found two individuals with injuries they said were not considered life-threatening. The two were taken to hospital by paramedics, police said.

The neighbourhood where the alleged assault took place near campus drew large crowds of homecoming revelers Saturday afternoon and into the evening.

The investigation remained ongoing as of Sunday, police said.

The weapon involved in the assault was not disclosed by police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call London police at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

London police, with assistance from Hamilton, Peterborough and Windsor police, along with city hall workers and London firefighters patrolled areas near Huron and Richmond streets on Saturday to keep a lid on unsanctioned student parties.

Large crowds of Western homecoming partiers flocked to house parties on Broughdale Avenue, a dead-end street between Richmond and Huron streets and Western’s main gates that is notorious for student parties, and surrounding streets starting on Saturday morning and throughout the day.

At one point on Saturday night, police warned that vehicle traffic lanes were slowed along Richmond Street as they advised pedestrians “to stay off the roadway.”

London police are expected to release details about the enforcement effort, including the number of tickets issued by officers, in the coming days.
