A Hollyoaks star has sent fans wild after announcing he’s set to join popular Netflix show Virgin River for its upcoming sixth season. Callum Kerr, who is better known for his role as George Kiss in E4’s Hollyoaks, has secured a recurring role in the hit show.
Virgin River, inspired by Robyn Carr’s cherished book series, follows nurse practitioner and midwife Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) as she relocates from Los Angeles to a secluded Californian town to start afresh following the tragic loss of her husband and unborn child.
Season 6 will give viewers an insight into Mel’s father’s life in the 1970s, with the younger version of this character being portrayed by Kerr.
The Mirror reports this development comes after Mel was finally reunited with her biological father Everett Reid, played by John Allen Nelson, during the series five Christmas special.
Virgin River fanatics can now look forward to a journey back to the 70s to witness scenes featuring Mel’s late mother Sarah, played by Jessica Rothe, and biological father throughout the season.
Netflix is also said to be introducing these recurring characters with the aim to potentially broaden the Virgin River universe with a spin-off prequel series that would explore Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
A fresh synopsis for the show teases: “Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth instalment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles [and] delightful wedding drama.”
It’s been revealed that season six will also explore “uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s”.
Actor Kerr, known for his roles in Monarch and Flowers in the Attic: The Origin TV mini-series, excitedly shared the news of his latest role with his 524,000 Instagram fans.
He posted: “Been keeping this one hush for a while. Over the moon to announce that I’ll be joining the Virgin River universe exclusively on Netflix.”
“Working alongside @jessica_rothe the character are introduced in Season 6 of the show and in the meantime, Netflix are developing a potential spinoff series for said characters. Exciting times indeed!!”
The announcement was met with enthusiasm from fans, evidenced by comments such as: “Love that show! Congratulations.”
One person exclaimed: “Shut your face, sir! So excited for you!!” While another comment read: “Incredible!! I love this show – congrats Callum!!” (sic)
This update follows moments of intense drama involving Kerr’s previous character George in Hollyoaks, where he was enmeshed in a powerful narrative displaying abusive and controlling behaviour towards his partner John Paul McQueen, played by James Sutton.
However, his downfall came in a dramatic turn of events in 2021 when he was confronted by Theresa McQueen (Jorgie Porter) and Sally St. Claire (Annie Wallace) before he could make a clean getaway from the village.
