Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has thrown his hat in the ring to return as Manchester United manager with Erik ten Hag facing mounting pressure.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for United and their Europa League campaign got off to a rocky start on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente.

Just two wins from their opening five league matches has seen United drop down to 11th and already six points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

And they face tricky back-to-back Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Aston Villa with pressure mounting on Ten Hag to turn things around.

Some fans have already been calling for the Dutchman to step aside following the draw with Twente this week.

A host of names have been linked with potentially replacing Ten Hag in the dugout at United.

And Solskjaer, who was sacked by United three years ago, has come out and said he would jump at the chance of a second go in the hot seat at Old Trafford.

“If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week,” Solskjaer said in a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum.

“It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”

Solskjaer spent nearly three years in charge of United and led them to a second-place finish behind Manchester City in 2021, but was sacked just a few months later.

The former Norway international has been out of management ever since, instead working with UEFA as a technical observer.

Gareth Southgate has been touted as the favourite to replace Ten Hag should he be sacked.

The former England manager left his role as Three Lions head coach after Euro 2024 and is also being linked with taking over at Everton.

But Ten Hag has urged for patience from angry United supporters calling for a change in management.

He said: “I think you have to assess the situation. Still now we are working and we are in progress.

“We have to sign players and we made the choice to sign very young players.

“Like last year, Hojlund and Zirkzee and Leny Yoro are players we believe in for this moment but also for the future and we have to build them.

“When I started we spoke about more, we had to make a switch in the dressing room. We have turned a corner and we have to work with the squad and that takes time and of course, [that is] also not good behaviour for me, I am impatient.

“I want to go straight forward. To be fair, we have also had success in the last two seasons and we have to work very hard to bring further success.”
