Alan Vera, a wrestler who competed for Cuba and the U.S., has died after suffering cardiac arrest while playing pick-up soccer.
Vera, 33, died on Monday night, two months after being hospitalized in New Jersey.
After he fought for several weeks to stay alive, “an unexpected infection took hold over the weekend,” reads a GoFundMe page set up to help with expenses for Alan’s Olympian wife, Elena Pirozkhova, and their infant daughter, who is only months old.
“We are heartbroken to share that Alan passed away last night at around 8 p.m.,” the page says. “After an unexpected infection took hold over the weekend, his body, despite fighting with every ounce of strength for the past two months, could no longer endure the battle.
“While his passing brings a sense of peace knowing he is no longer suffering, the void left behind is immeasurable.”
Pirozkhova is a two-time American Olympian in women’s wrestling. Vera fell just short of the qualifying for this summer’s Olympic Games in the 97 kg weight class of Greco-Roman wrestling.

“Our hearts have been broken. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Elena, Alina and all of Alan’s family, as well as those who have known Alan,” USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender wrote in a news release.
“The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion whose incredible life impacted so many within USA Wrestling and around the world.”
As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised more than US$51,000.
“Ever since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always ready to do anything for anyone in need,” Herb House, USA Wrestling national Greco-Roman coach, said. “His selflessness and dedication have made a lasting impact on me.”
Vera competed for his native Cuba until 2016, when he immigrated to the U.S. and then competed for America. He won a Pan-American title in 2016 before making the switch.
