Three brand new units have been installed in St Nicholas covered market, and opened today (Thursday, September 26). Food Source BS1 will see three new businesses opening up in the new units to ‘provide a unique dining experience for the residents of Bristol’.
According to Bristol City Council, the three new eateries are Red Tiger – which will serve Malaysian street food – Bristol Calabash (offering Jamaican snacks and drinks), and Ceylon & Beyond, which boasts a menu of Sri Lankan street food.
The new market units come thanks to a successful bid by Bristol City Council and the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, for £500,000 of government funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The grant, and its subsequent investment into Food Source, aims to “continue the revival of this historic area, and put St Nicks Market firmly on the UK’s culinary map”.
Cameron Cheek, markets manager at St Nicks Market, said: “We pride ourselves on our trader’s authenticity and the international food offering at the market. We are extremely pleased to welcome three new traders to the St Nicks Market community.
“The community spirit among the traders fosters a really supportive environment and we can’t wait to see what Red Tiger, Ceylon & Beyond, and Bristol Calabash add to the plate!”
Tenants of the new units will also be nominated for the Bristol Eating Better Award (BEBA), which celebrates Bristol’s ‘varied choices for healthy and sustainable food options’. Winners of this year’s award will join 340 other Bristol businesses that have already achieved the award, from cafes and restaurants, to market stalls and takeaways.
The owner of Red Tiger, Hari, said: “Our journey, from hosting food nights with friends and family to setting up a small stall at St Nicks Night Market, has always been driven by our deep love for food, especially Malaysian street food, which tells the rich, diverse story of its people.
“Launching in this new space feels like the next chapter in our story. It’s not just about the food, it’s about bringing a piece of Malaysia to a city that has truly become our second home. We believe Red Tiger can add something special to Bristol’s vibrant food scene, and we’re excited to take this journey to the next level at the iconic St Nicks Market.”
