One of Bristol’s most popular swimming pools has had to close ‘with immediate effect’ after this week’s heavy rain damaged the roof. The Bristol South Swimming Pool has only recently reopened after a lengthy refurbishment, but the torrential and persistent downpours have damaged the roof so much that the pool has had to close.
A statement from Everyone Active, the leisure firm that runs Bristol’s council pools, did not give a reopening date, and said the pool in Dean Lane, Bedminster, was closed ‘with immediate effect’.
The statement said: “Bristol South Swimming Pool is closed with immediate effect due to damage to the roof following heavy rain. Swimming lesson members can use the pools at Easton Leisure Centre, Horfield Leisure Centre and Henbury Leisure Centre during the closure. Please call to book or visit reception.
“Customer safety is our top priority, and we are working with the council on repairs to the roof as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”
The pool was built in 1931 next to the site of the former Dean Lane Colliery, close to Dame Emily Park, but by the end of the 2010s was showing its age. It closed down in 2018 for repairs and then completely closed in 2019, before reopening in 2021 after a major refurbishment, and is used by local schools as well as public swimming sessions every morning and evening.
