An ignominious record has the Hamilton Police Service asking for the public’s help.

With 51 reported shootings in Steel City so far this year — that matches the record set in 2020 — and gun seizures happening more often, Hamilton cops are encouraging anyone with information on illegal guns or activity to come forward.

Calling the rising gun violence “troubling,” police are reaching out to the public in an effort to get it under control.

“Addressing violence in our community requires the active involvement of our entire city,” Hamilton Police said in a press release Thursday. “By working together, and sharing information, we can make a significant difference.”

On Sept. 21, a group walking on King St. was confronted by an individual who allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Officers responded and arrested a suspect, who was allegedly in possession of a loaded firearm, illicit drugs and a “significant” amount of cash.

Since January, Hamilton cops have seized 301 firearms, including 68 that fall into the restricted category. Those seizures have led to the arrest of 25 people, who are facing 164 charges. Traffic-related events have led to nine guns being seized.

“This is not the kind of record we want to set for our city,” Chief Frank Bergen said in the release. “A small number of individuals continue to engage in reckless behaviour that puts lives at risk. This must stop.”
