This winter, some Universal Credit recipients will receive assistance with their energy bills. Being on Universal Credit is one of the criteria for the Warm Home Discount scheme, provided claimants also face high energy costs due to factors like the size and condition of their home, as determined by the Government.

Other benefits that qualify include Housing Benefit and Income Support. The Warm Home Discount offers a one-time reduction of £150 from energy bills between October and March, primarily aimed at supporting less well-off pensioners, though other households with significant energy expenses may also be eligible if they meet the requirements.

Energy suppliers are responsible for applying the discount within the October to March period. The majority of qualifying customers will receive the discount automatically and do not need to apply, reports Birmingham Live.

Eligible individuals should expect to receive letters by post detailing the process. The Government explains: “The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill.”

“If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you. You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible.”
