A proposed new project to build a new railway station on the outskirts of Bristol could be a step closer to beginning as revised plans have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council last week. The new railway station would be built just outside Henbury to land east of the A4018 Wyck Beck Road, near Gainsborough Avenue.
Originally, plans were submitted to the council in July and August 2023, and comments were received in September. Plans were then revised and new documents were submitted this month, as a hybrid application including the new ramp proposed, ahead of a planned consultation on Wednesday, October 9, in order to obtain full planning permission.
The station would consist of one platform and be installed along the Avonmouth and Filton Railway line. The station, alongside the recently built Ashley Down station and the planned North Filton station, would reopen the Henbury Line.
As part of the development, a car park would be created with 31 parking spaces and an additional three disabled parking bays will be available. The parking spaces will be located within 50 metres of the station entrance. A total of 40 cycle stands will also be installed.
The sole platform at the station, which would form the end of the new line running from Temple Meads, would cater for five carriage trains which could accommodate 582 passengers. Trains would run between 5am and midnight.
The application states: “The station will consist of a single platform. Access to the station will be off Passage Road with additional pedestrian access from the A4018 via a ramp.
“The permanent future station access for vehicles is to be via the new all movements signalised junction with A4018 to the north of the station which has replaced an existing left-in, left-out junction with Passage Road. This access junction has been delivered as part of the wider surrounding residential development at Fishpool Hill to the north and east of the site.
“The station would take internal access from a new priority junction with Gainsborough Avenue. This would connect with the proposed station car park at its northeast corner.”
The new station forms part of the MetroWest Phase 2 plans to improve rail travel across Bristol and the fringe area. The first phase of the project focused on the Portishead line, which has since come under threat.
The second phase would allow for an hourly train service between Henbury and Temple Meads, stopping at North Filton and Ashley Down. The Henbury station would come with ticket machines but would be unmanned.
The North Filton railway station, which would be located within the new Brabazon suburb, was delayed due to changes with the housing development, despite planning permission already being granted. It is expected to open in 2026, whilst the Henbury station could open in 2027.
