The Ottawa Catholic School Board is praising the efforts of everyone involved at Saint Brother André Elementary School in Gloucester after a newborn baby was left outside the school’s doors on Sept. 11.
There was prompt action all around when the surprise precious delivery was discovered.
School principal Nadine Vigneault confirmed the arrival but forwarded all further questions to the OCSB, in keeping with board policy.
“The Ottawa Catholic School Board is proud of the positive action taken by our students and staff in response to the recent incident,” the OCSB said in a statement issued to the Ottawa Citizen.
“Their quick thinking and compassion helped to provide time for life-saving support from EMS staff.”
School staff took care of the baby until police and paramedics arrived.
“The personnel from the school immediately cared for the baby,” the Ottawa Paramedic Service said in a statement. “The patient was treated on scene by the paramedics and taken to the hospital in serious condition.”
The paramedics said they do not receive updates after patients are received at hospital.
Ottawa police also confirmed they were on the scene as quickly as possible.
“On Sept. 11, at approximately 11:40 a.m., Ottawa police, as part of a tiered response, attended the Gloucester area for a baby in distress,” the OPS said in a statement.
Citing confidentiality agreements and the fact it’s an ongoing investigation, Ottawa police offered no further comment on the location and or status of the baby.
“We ask that the privacy of those involved be respected as they cope with this difficult situation,” said the OCSB. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the baby and those dealing with this situation.”
