Northern Ireland coach Diarmuid O’Carroll will retain his role in Michael O’Neill’s backroom staff despite being appointed manager of Newcastle United’s Under-21 team.

A key member of Michael O’Neill’s backroom staff, O’Carroll has quit his other job as assistant manager of Scottish Premiership club St Mirren to Newcastle.

O’Carroll said: “It’s been a whirlwind few days but I am overjoyed to be joining such a huge club and I am really excited about the role

“There is a huge amount of talent in the Newcastle United Under 21 playing and backroom teams. The chance to link up with Eddie Howe and the first team, too, is particularly exciting.

“To add this to the journey I’m on with Northern Ireland and the chance to fuse my experiences in both club and international football is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Former striker O’Carroll won the Irish League title on four occasions – twice with Cliftonville and twice with Crusaders – as well as enjoying stints with Celtic, Glenavon and Dungannon Swifts.

As a coach, he previously worked for Morecambe and Motherwell as well as holding a number of roles within the Irish FA.

Former Northern Ireland international Stephen Robinson will continue to manager St Mirren.
