A major road on the outskirts of Bristol will undergo five nights of closures from today (Monday, September 23) due to “electrical cabling works”. The A369 Portbury Hundreds, the link road between junction 19 of the M5 and Portishead, will close from 8pm every night this week and reopen at 6am the following morning.

North Somerset Council confirmed that the road will be closed during this time for all traffic, excluding emergency services, works access and for work vehicles. The road will close from the junction with Sheepway and the B3124, to the junction of the M5.

An order was issued by the council to close the road during the electrical cabling works due to the “likelihood of danger to the public” by the work undertaken by National Highways. The night closures could be enforced for a maximum of 18 months, however the work is anticipated to be for only five nights in duration.

A night diversion will be in place whilst the work is undertaken. The diversion is 18 miles in length and drivers will drive as far as Clevedon and Failand.

The diversion, starting at the Sheepway roundabout, follows the B3124 Portbury Common onto Clevedon Road and continues on the B3124 through Gordano into Clevedon. Drivers will turn left onto All Saints Lane and join the B3130 Tickenham Road, heading eastbound.

Vehicles will need to follow the B3130 until Stone Edge Batch, on the outskirts of Nailsea. The diversion then follows the B3128 through Failand and onto the B3129 Beggar Bush Lane and continuing until Leigh Woods.

Drivers will turn onto the A369 heading northwest bound and continue on the A369 to reach the M5 junction. A 40 mile-an-hour speed limit will be enforced on Martcombe Road due to existing work.

On the night of Wednesday, September 25, Weir Lane will also close to traffic to allow Openreach to access joint boxes for telephone cables. The closure, between the junction of the B3129 and Manor Road from 7pm to 6am, will mean drivers will be unable to use the road as a shortcut on the diversion during the night.
