A child who was in the back of a stolen car has been found safe and well.

The Child Rescue Ireland Alert for the five-month-old was cancelled after she was found in Dublin city centre.

“We would like to thank the public and media for their assistance. No additional details are available at this time,” a garda spokesperson said.

Shortly before 2pm today the baby’s mother was standing outside her car in the Gardiner Street area of the north inner city when a male suspect hijacked the vehicle with the baby inside in the back seat.

The car sped off onto Dorset Street and a major alert was in place in the northside of the capital.

The shocking incident led gardaí to issue a CRI alert this afternoon.

In a statement gardaí said they had serious concerns about an immediate and serious risk to the health or welfare of the small child.

At approximately 1.50pm gardaí received report of a hijacking of a vehicle from Mountjoy Square in Dublin 1. The car was hijacked by a man who is not known to the child.

A Child Rescue Ireland (CRI) Alert is only launched when all the following criteria exist – the child is aged under the age of 18; there is a reasonable belief that the child has been abducted; there is an immediate and serious risk to the health or welfare of a child and there is sufficient information available to enable the public to assist gardaí locating the child.
