A former elite Irish soldier has been killed in action in Ukraine.

The man, aged in his late 20s, was killed in combat on Thursday, September 19.

It is understood the man, who was a highly skilled and experienced soldier had been a member of the Defence Forces Army Ranger wing.

It is understood the deceased joined the Ukrainian army at the outbreak of war but suffered significant injuries in late 2022.

However, he returned to Ukraine earlier this year and was killed fighting on the front line.

The deceased is believed to be from the East of the Country.

President Michael D Higgins extended his condolences to the family of the former Irish solider who died in Ukraine, describing it as a “terrible tragedy”.
