The funeral of a courageous Newry teenager who battled leukaemia will take place on Monday.

Daniel Greer passed away on Friday morning after a two-year fight.

From Newry, Daniel was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2022 after complaining about a sore back and neck.

The disease spread rapidly and aggressively, and an urgent campaign was launched.

Daniel’s story encouraged more than 8,000 potential donors to sign up with the DKMS charity at the time.

Cruelly, it was thought he had overcome the disease.

In May, Daniel’s family shared a video of him ringing the bell at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for what was thought to be the end of his treatment which involved chemotherapy, three complicated stem cell transplants and emergency surgeries.

However, in an update in July the family revealed that just weeks after Daniel returned home to Newry, they were told that his leukaemia had returned.

He died on Friday morning with his family by his side.

His family said: “We are devastated to have to tell you that our beautiful boy Daniel passed away at home in the early hours of this morning, surrounded by his family. Our little warrior fought so hard to live, having battled leukaemia for more than two years.

“We are so grateful for all the support of everyone who helped to try to save him – from his amazing medical teams, his wonderful, caring nurses, all the charities that stepped in to support his family during his long illness and, of course, to the thousands of people who signed up as bone marrow/stem cell donors in response to our desperate pleas for help.”

A funeral notice said requiem mass will take place at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Cloughoge, at noon on Monday.

It added: “He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his heartbroken parents, brother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and his entire family circle.”
