Thousands of spectators descended on the north coast for the return of the Northern Ireland International Air Show on Saturday.

Sky watchers caught a glimpse of World War Two aircraft including the Lancaster Bomber and Hurricane fighter jet as the event took off in Portrush for the first time in five years.

A Supermarine Spitfire and RAF Typhoon also graced the skies of the north coast and will make further appearances on Sunday as the largest air display on the entire island of Ireland continues.

Visitors were treated to spectacular aerobatic performance from Airbourne Pyrotechnics on the first day of the action packed event celebrating all things aviation.

It was perfect weather conditions for all involved including pilots, wingwalkers and plane spotters lining the route from Ballyreagh Golf Course to the town’s West Bay which boasts panoramic views and offers prime viewing spots.

An array of vintage aircraft, live music, trade stands, fun zone, artisan food markets, and arts and crafts stalls provided plenty of family fun on the stunning coastal route as mesmerising flypasts took place.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, which organised the event, said he is “thrilled to see the return of our beloved Air Show once again following a five-year absence”.

Councillor Steven Callaghan hailed it as “one of the biggest highlights” in the borough’s tourism calendar.

“I am particularly excited about the new location this year,” he added.

“It will provide visitors with the best possible viewing experience as they enjoy the spectacular aerial acrobatics.”

The air display was axed in 2020 in a cost-cutting move by the local authority following criticism of the hefty price tag believed to have been around £223,000 in 2019.
