A confirmed case of measles has been diagnosed In Northern Ireland.
A person arrived at the emergency department of Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital last weekend with symptoms of the condition.
It’s understood as many as 300 people have been contacted by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust as a result.
Measles infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body. Protection against measles is offered via the MMR vaccine, which is recommended for all babies and young children.
A Belfast Health and Social Care Trust spokesperson said: “Belfast Trust is aware of a confirmed case of measles in an individual who attended the Royal Victoria Hospital Emergency Department.
“In line with guidance from the Public Health Agency, we have written to a number of patients who may have had contact with the person in the emergency department and will continue to work closely with the PHA to ensure all appropriate public health actions are taken.”
