A woman who died following a crash outside Ballymena has been named as Eileen Thornton, who was from the Broughshane and Glarryford areas.

The 44-year-old was involved in a single-vehicle collision which happened on the Cushendall Road on Tuesday evening.

Police and paramedics attended the scene shortly after 8pm.

Ms Thornton died later in hospital.

She was the much loved daughter of David and the late Angela, loving sister of Gareth and Gregory, sister-in-law of Jenny and Louise and dear aunt of Dean, Lewis and Courteney.

Her funeral arrangements will be announced later and family flowers only are requested. Donations in lieu, if desired, may be sent to James Henry Funeral Services 100 Broughshane Street, Ballymena BT43 6EE for NI Chest, Heart and Stroke.

PSNI Inspector Cherith Adair from the Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit has offered condolences to the loved ones of Ms Thornton.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this time and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances,” she said.

“The Collision Investigation Unit is appealing to anyone who may have any information which may assist with our investigation, or who may have been travelling in the area at the time and captured any dash-cam or other footage, to get in touch on 101, quoting reference number 1515 03/09/24.”

Ms Thornton was driving a black Peugeot car when the crash happened.

It is the second death on Northern Ireland’s roads this week, after a man was killed in a car crash in Co Londonderry.

Alan Barr, an Ulster Unionist councillor for the area, said: “Within a 24-hour period, people are hearing the news of another tragic death on our roads.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the woman’s family and friends.

“I also want to praise the efforts of the efforts of the emergency services who attended the scene. My sympathies are with them also as they regularly attend scenes of carnage on our roads.

“As we enter the darker nights, unfortunately the risk of road traffic collisions increases.

“Therefore, I urge community groups and individuals to engage with organisations such as Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Road Safe NI, who offer excellent road safety educational programmes.”
