The long weekend was a deadly one on Ontario roads, according to provincial police.
Two pedestrians, a motorcyclist and the driver of an off-road vehicle were among seven traffic fatalities, the OPP said in a news release issued on Thursday.
Considering the number of charges laid over the Labour Day weekend, the outcome might have been worse.
“Throughout the weekend, the OPP did its part to keep travellers safe and hold accountable those who did not,” the OPP said, adding a whopping 9,143 traffic/marine and Criminal Code charges were laid across Ontario.
“Aggressive drivers were the most significant offenders, making roads unsafe for the many families and other people travelling throughout the province to take in the last long weekend of summer,” the OPP said.
The breakdown included officers laying 4,841 speeding charges and 124 stunt driving/racing charges as well as 545 no-seatbelt charges, 234 for impaired driving, and 102 for distracted driving.
“With children and other students heading back to school, the OPP reminds drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to use roads responsibly and help ensure everyone gets to and from their destination safely,” the OPP said.
