The University of Saskatchewan Huskies dug a quick hole, and spent their rest of their Saturday afternoon trying — and failing — to climb out.

The football Huskies, playing their Canada West season opener in Winnipeg, lost 37-21 to the Manitoba Bison Saturday. A 21-0 deficit after the first quarter established the game’s tone.

A couple of Huskie touchdowns in the second quarter closed the gap to 25-14 at halftime, but that was as close as they’d get.

Saskatchewan quarterback Anton Amundrud — whose team entered the game with the No. 9 national ranking — completed 29 of 43 passes for 356 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. His Manitoba counterpart, Jackson Tachinski, hit 12 of 20 for 156 yards and two majors.

Saskatchewan receiver Daniel Wiebe led all ball-catchers with 11 for 202 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

The Huskies also got a 16-yard touchdown catch from Jesse Kuntz and a two-yard TD run from Amundrud, the latter coming with 1:52 left in the game.

Manitoba’s scoring came from AK Gassama (34-yard catch), Breydon Stubbs (runs of one and 22 yards) and Vaughan Lloyd (20-yard catch). Maya Turner added field goals of 25 and 38 yards.

Elsewhere in Canada West this weekend, the Regina Rams beat the host Calgary Dinos 24-16, and the visiting Alberta Golden Bears beat the British Columbia Thunderbirds 42-28.

The Huskies return to action this coming Friday, when they travel to Regina for a game with the Rams. Saskatchewan’s home opener is Sept. 16 against Calgary.
