Sandro Tonali was a roaring success on his return to action after 10 months out of football.

The Newcastle star started against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup in the middle of the pitch and looked right back at home.

Tonali had been banned from taking part in football for 10 months last season after being found guilty of breaching gambling rules.

It came just months into his new life at St. James’ Park having made the switch from AC Milan in the summer of 2023.

And fans were desperate to see the Italy international in action at the City Ground – and they were not disappointed.

“He’s had a really tough time and an isolated period training on his own, travelling back to Italy on his own,” Magpies boss Eddie Howe said before the game.

“He’s had a lot of time to think about his situation. He’s handled himself brilliantly.

“I’m delighted this moment’s come for him. It’s not just about this game, we’re getting a player back who’s a top level player. It’s about managing his first few games back.”

Howe gave the midfielder an hour of football to ease him back into life in top-flight football but he was impressive throughout.

He completed all of his passes and won all of his duels, creating two chances, managing one clearance and a recovery as well.

While the 24-year-old missed a good chance, Tonali is still understandably rusty and looked good considering his lengthy lay-off.

And fans were loving his impact, with one saying on social media: “It’s testament to Sandro Tonali’s pure ability as a footballer that he’s the best player on the pitch in this first half despite 10 months out.

“His vision, hard running & speed of passing and thought is everything good about #NUFC so far. Super player.”

Newcastle took a rapid lead against Nottingham Forest after just 18 seconds when Joe Willock tucked in Alexander Isak’s rebounded shot.

However, Forest struck back through debutant Jota Silva with a brilliant drive from distance, that sent the contest to penalties.

Howe’s men claimed victory on spot-kicks with Sean Longstaff scoring the final kick.
